Esther 9

“Therefore these days were called Purim, from the word pur.) because of everything written in this letter and because of what they had seen and what had happened to them, the Jews took it on themselves to establish the custom that they and their descendants and all who join them should without fail observe these two days every year, in the way prescribed and at the time appointed.” Esther 9:26-27 NIV

Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, or some other occasion, we celebrate many things with the intention of remembering the significance of what happened that day. The decision for the Jews to observe these days every year was a public declaration of the truth that they experienced, to remember the almighty power of the Lord, and to pass these miraculous events onto their future generations so that it would not be forgotten. For what was to be the day of their sorrow and mourning, turned out to be a day of joy and celebration.

This reminded me that when we receive mercies from the Lord, we should not forget the comfort of them, nor withhold the glory due Him. It also reminded me that the day of death is a day of mourning, but as a believer, we can rejoice with a holy joy in the anticipation and blessedness of heaven.

  1. This was interesting to me: “he called for Queen Esther. He said, “The Jews have killed 500 men in the fortress of Susa alone, as well as Haman’s ten sons. If they have done that here, what has happened in the rest of the provinces? But now, what more do you want? It will be granted to you; tell me and I will do it.””

Shouldn’t the king be concerned about its citizens? 🤔 seems a little odd (and cause for revolt) that the king is allowing the slaughter.
