Esther 10

“Mordecai the Jew became the prime minister, with authority next to that of King Xerxes himself. He was very great among the Jews, who held him in high esteem, because he continued to work for the good of his people and to speak up for the welfare of all their descendants.” Esther 10:3 NLT

This is the closing verse to the book of Esther. We have seen how God has been working in the background by orchestrating specific events and putting people in particular positions for those specific times. Here we read how Mordecai was great for and among the Jews. The Jews held him in high esteem for his ability to seek out their interests and to speak out on their behalf. He did not seek his own wealth, which would have been the thing most men in power aim to gain, but rather he consulted the welfare of his people and chose to advance that instead. This resulted in not only a blessing for this generation, but for all their descendants too.

May this encourage us to live by faith in Christ and to act upon the opportunities that He gives us, taking into account the interests of others, with the sole purpose of promoting God’s glory.

  1. That verse stood out for me too. It reminds me of a song we sing at our chapels and a lyric of the song is that “God’s kingdom is upside down” So many things are “upside down” in the book of Esther: a Jewish girl is crowned Queen, Haman designs a torture device that he ends up being killed with, Mordecai almost killed becomes prime minister with power equal to the king?? Totally sounds like a kingdom upside down and that nothing is impossible through God’s providence.
