“John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.” Mark 1:6 NIV
We read this verse yesterday in Matthew 3 and we come across it again in Mark’s text today. This verse provides us with some insight as to John’s appearance and his diet. His clothing was made of camel’s hair, which would have been a very coarse texture; while his diet consisted of locusts and wild honey, which would have been a diet of simplicity and even considered to be inferior in flavour.
I do find it interesting that Scripture included John’s appearance and diet, and it caused me to examine and question my goals and my purpose. Am I striving for a nicer place to live? Am I focused on having nicer clothes, vehicles, or other items of comfort? Now, don’t get me wrong, God wants to bless us with these items through our hard labour, so I am not saying that there is anything wrong with having our daily comforts, but what is our focus?
For John, it was preparing the way of the Lord and preaching the need of repentance. His focus was on eternity and the Kingdom of God – not that which is temporal and of this world. May we not lose sight of our eternal focus – the Great Commission given to us by Christ himself – to go and make disciples, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey everything that the Lord has commanded.

Great thoughts.
This two things stood out for me: “And they left their nets at once and followed him.”
Mark 1:18 NLT
Having recently left my job, it’s hard enough to leave for another direction but to not even know the direction must have been even more scary!
And this verse: “Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away.”
Mark 1:30 NLT
While watching the chosen, we questioned Simon’s role being cast as a husband and we wondered if that was artistic license?? This verse indicated that he likely was or had been married since he did have a mother in law. Interesting to think Jesus would have called away a husband to leave his wife but we are called to obey even when it could be against our will.
