John 2

“The Jews then responded to him, ‘What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?’ Jesus answered, ‘Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.’ They replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?’ But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.” John 2:18-22 NIV

Many sayings of the Saviour are obscure and difficult to understand. The disciples did not always understand them either, but they chose to treasure his words upon their hearts and memory. In doing so, as events occurred down the road, they could look back at what Jesus had said and now bring meaning to what He meant. In addition to that, this would also add to their belief of all Scripture.

It was not days but years for the disciples to finally understand what Christ meant by those words. We can learn from this, the importance of treasuring up the truths of the Bible now, though we may not perfectly understand all things. In fact, the Lord does not expect us to know all things, but rather we are to trust and have faith in Him. For God is the one who began a good work in us and He will carry it through to completion.

  1. “But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people.”
    ‭‭John‬ ‭2:24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We are fickle human beings. Wanting it to be cold when it’s warm. Changing our mind as often as the weather changes. Constantly putting our own wants and desires ahead of others. Jesus was human too and would have understood how He would have to fight against human (sinful) nature to live a perfect life. He knew His closest friends would betray him. He knew the crowd would turn from saying Hosanna to Crucify Him in just one week. He knew people would choose not to believe despite all the signs and fulfillment of prophecy. He didn’t trust people because we can’t be trusted and we fail continually. Thank goodness for His grace and mercy when we fall short.
