“Then he (Jesus) said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27 NIV
The Sabbath was designed with the purpose of privilege and benefit in mind, rather than a task. God did not design it to be a burden to us so we should not make it so for ourselves. The Sabbath was instituted for the good of mankind – to rest from work and to give opportunity to call off our attention from the world we live in, so that we can direct our attention to that of eternity.
In looking at the order of creation, man was created before the Sabbath: “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from his work.” (Genesis 2:2) The Sabbath was therefore created and intended for our welfare and having our best interest in mind. May we use it as the Lord intended it to be.

Interesting that the same verse stood out for me! “Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.”
Mark 2:27 NLT
Rest is not a word many people know or do. There’s almost a badge of honour for being overcommitted, over scheduled, and busy. Just as many other biblically mandated things are counter cultural (monogamy, purity before marriage, submission, etc) Sabbath may be one of the hardest to abide to. To choose to rest recognizes the need for it, allows reflection, and in essence demonstrates trust that even when we take time to rest that things will get done.
