“The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household.” Matthew 10:24-25 NIV
Followers of Jesus learn from Matthew about true discipleship. It means emulating Him and pursuing a genuine righteousness that exceeds that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law. Discipleship is the process of becoming like Christ in everything.
During the sermon on the mount, which we recently read, Jesus described his ideal to the disciples – to be forgiving, honest, genuine, humble, and kind to the needy. True disciples will proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God, worthy of all our praise, Lord over all, and the Saviour to all repentant sinners. The primary purpose of Jesus’ coming to the world was to establish the kingdom of God through his death.
If we believe that that was Christ’s purpose and that we are to emulate Him, then may we be encouraged to persevere in discipleship. Like Christ who only received His reward in Heaven, may that too, be sufficient for us . May we also keep our eyes fixed on Him, in order to become like Him. For He is our blueprint.

Great thoughts.
What I thought was interesting was that after the disciples were called they were given a very clear (and somewhat harsh) job description. Imagine getting called to a job and being told:
Don’t have any possessions
Don’t have your own home
You will be attacked
You will be arrested
You will be betrayed
Nations will hate you
You will be persecuted
You will be called names
You will fear for your life
You can’t put anyone above God
This verse stood out for me:
“You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.”
Matthew 10:18 NLT
The key is found in this verse “but”. We may experience many difficult things due to our faith BUT in all circumstances God is faithful to give us a reason for the hardships
