Mark 6

“He (Jesus) could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith……And wherever he went – into villages, towns, or countryside – they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.” Mark 6:5-6 & 56

A great definition of faith can be found in Hebrews 11:1 – “Now faith is the confidence in what we hope for and the assurance about what we do not see”. The above verses depict the result of either lacking in faith or possessing it. Because the people in Nazareth, Jesus’ hometown, lacked faith very few could be healed. On the other hand, as Jesus and his disciples travelled to distant places, people were begging to touch the edge of his cloak in order to be healed.

The One who healed and the power from which it came remained the same, the main difference between the two scenarios was the people and their level of faith. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2 that it is through our faith in Christ that we receive God’s gift of salvation. We are ‘healed’ by approaching His throne and begging Him to forgive us. This gift of salvation does not come from within ourselves and is available for everyone who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

  1. “He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them,”
    ‭‭Mark‬ ‭6:48‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Sometimes when you’ve heard the same stories for your whole life you tend to skip over the details without really thinking about it. Like why were they crossing the River at 3:00 in the morning? (A quick google search indicates that it takes about two hours to sail across the Sea of Galilee) since Jesus was walking across the water at 3:00, does that mean they started crossing the seas at 2:00?? Why were they not in bed? Also, if it was only 2 hours to cross, why were they struggling again the storm? Wouldn’t they have seen it coming? I’ve just never considered why they were in the wafer at that hour of the day. Interesting!
