John 6

“For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.” John 6:55-57 NLT

There is a saying that says “You are what you eat”. The thought behind this saying is not Scripturally based, but there is value in its principle; it is important to eat good food in order to be healthy and fit. Also, there is another saying within the exercise/health world that says “You can’t out exercise a bad diet”.

In the verses above, Jesus is introducing to his disciples a new concept for them – that He is the way to the Heavenly Father and having eternal life. In order to be healthy and fit, we need to eat right and exercise. In the same way, in order to have eternal life we also need to eat right and exercise.

The eating of Christ’s flesh and the drinking of His blood, is believing in Him; that he came as a child, lived a perfect life, bore our sins on the cross, and conquered death by being raised to life by his Heavenly Father. But it does not end there. In verse 57 above, Jesus says that anyone who feeds on me will live. The words “feeds on me” implies a gradual, constant, and steadily move towards Him. This means continually taking in more of Him and less of the world and its unfulfilling pleasures.

May we choose to take in our daily portion of Christ. Feeding and drinking from Him, who is the Bread of Life.

  1. Yesterday I heard a commentary/podcast that talked about how Andrew was a relationship based witness for the gospel. His name is only specifically mentioned when it comes to a relationship. That brought these verses to my attention: “Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?””
    ‭‭John‬ ‭6:8-9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

How did he know the boy had such a lunch? Was he talking with the boy to know that? Why would he even mention it? Did he know Jesus would take it and multiply the contents? May we also seek to be relational with others and share with them how God can use what they have to grow His kingdom.
