“‘Be careful,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’” Matthew 16:6 NIV
Yeast is a leavening agent that is used in the process of fermentation and it’s purpose is to produce a gas that makes the dough rise. Once activated, yeast begins feeding on the sugars in flour, and releases the carbon dioxide which in turn, makes the bread rise. Yeast will also add many of the distinctive flavours and aromas that we associate with bread.
Though we do not see it, yeast will secretly and silently pass through the batter of dough. So it was with the Pharisees and Sadducees doctrine at that time, and false teachings of today. They are insinuating, colourful, and even somewhat credible, in order to conceal the real tendency of their doctrine, while secretly spreading and filling the mind and heart with that which is not from God.
May we be deeply rooted in God’s Word and ask the Lord to provide us with Spiritual wisdom so that we will know Him better.

I was just drafting a post today about food sensitivities and yeast is one of the common food restrictions that is not easily identified as a trigger because it can be hidden. Sources of yeast include: grapes, berries, soy sauce, tofu, and yogurt. I think comparing the Pharisees and Sadducees to yeast can also allude your the fact that on the surface, it can seem good but consumption of the food with yeast can have serious consequences. Pharisees and Sadducees appear good (honouring God’s law) in the surface but their actions and works can cause serious harm to the body (of believers)
