John 19

“Pilate answered, ‘What I have written, I have written.’” John 19:22 NIV

This verse stood out to me because it appears as though Pilate knows in his heart who Jesus is, but once again is not willing to make that stand publicly. Perhaps Pilate thought that this could be his way of making it better…..for himself, or easing his conscience.

The other thought that came to my mind is that everyday we are making a permanent record of ourselves. Though often the impact or result of our decisions, whether they are good or bad sometimes fade away, all of the entries we make into our diaries are permanent. They are irreversible and what has been written, has been written.

But by the grace of God and the blood that was poured out by Christ, we have the opportunity to be made new. Though circumstances remain, a pardon from God is given to all who ask, and the consequence of eternal death is now non-existent.

It was Christ who bore our sins on the cross and it is only Christ that can blot out the writing that deserves to be fastened to our cross.

One thought on “John 19

  1. “The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.”
    ‭‭John‬ ‭19:20‬ ‭NLT‬‬
I thought the same thing: Pilate was trying to ease his own conscience. No only did he insist on the sign, but made it easy for everyone to read it. He believed and declared Jesus innocent but still allowed him to be crucified.
