Acts 1

“Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.” Acts 1:26 NIV

Whenever I read of lots being cast to determine the will of God, I always think to myself ‘wow, what faith!’ And after the fact, not doubting and not questioning the outcome. To not request a re-do; you know, just in case it wasn’t correct the first time. Or suggesting a best of 5 or even better, a best of 7 just to make sure we get this right.

Prior to this verse, they prayed to the Lord to show them whom He has chosen, in order to exclude their human will. In this verse, it says that the lot “fell” to Matthias which would indicate that this was not a vote. The decision to select Judas’ replacement was left for the Lord who knows every heart so that they would have no doubt.

How strong is my faith? Do I give God a chance to reveal His plan, or am I too quick to make the decision myself? Does the outcome fall within my will or the Lord’s?

May our faith be as strong as the disciples’ who recently witnessed Christ’s resurrection and now His ascension into Heaven. The Lord who knows all hearts and all things, also knows what’s best for us. May we allow for His hand to determine the path we ought to take that lies before us.

  1. My thoughts ran along those lines too but I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Barsabbas. He was so close and then didn’t make it. Kind of like a survivor tribal council rock picking elimination.

“So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.”
    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭1:23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    Made me wonder:
    What happened to him after?
Why couldn’t there be more than 12?
If they had known the true cost of following, would they have wanted to be a replacement??
