“When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria.” Acts 8:14 NIV
The apostles, by great example, show the importance of not only having the desire to to further solidify a new believer’s faith, but to also act upon that desire. According to Google maps with today’s walkways, it would take almost 22 hours to walk that distance, so this was not a short walk.
After disowning Christ three times, Peter was later reinstated by Jesus in John chapter 21. Three times Jesus asked Peter if he loved him and three times Peter said, “You know that I love you.” Jesus’ response to Peter’s answers were “feed my lambs” (verse15), “take care of my sheep” (verse 16), and “feed my sheep” (verse 17).
In today’s reading we see Peter (and John) being obedient by travelling to Samaria in order that they can feed Christ’s lambs. These were recent converts in need of a firm foundation for their new faith in Christ. They needed sound doctrine, effective teaching, prayer, encouragement, and examples in how to live for Christ.
Jesus commanded Peter was to feed his lambs – His baby sheep. May we, like the apostles, recognize the importance of feeding, nurturing, and caring for new believers in Christ, so that they too can deepen their faith and further the Kingdom of God.

“But Saul was going everywhere to destroy the church. He went from house to house, dragging out both men and women to throw them into prison.”
Acts of the Apostles 8:3 NLT
It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. It’s true in a game, it’s true in a race, it’s true in life. Saul was determined to destroy the church. I think we sometimes gloss over Paul’s life before he came to Christ, wrote much of the NT, and gave his whole life after to serve. Perhaps that’s the point…our life before Christ doesn’t really matter and it’s only how we finish that really counts.
