James 4

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.” James 4:7-8a NIV

In this chapter, we are directed to consider and to watch out against that which causes contention in our walk with God. To know and understand what our true inner desires are, to watch out for what we covet, and to realize our motives in doing what we do. We are told to abandon the friendship of this world and to entirely submit and subject ourselves to God.

In the verses above, there are two truths: when we resist the devil he flees from us and when we draw near to God, He draws near to us. It is our choice then, in who we will resist and who we will submit to. For it cannot be both.

May we choose to submit to Christ; putting on the full armour of God so that we can resist temptation, seeking His grace and favour, allowing God to draw near to us, and dwell in our hearts.

  1. I thought this was appropriate for a brand new year. “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.”
    ‭‭James‬ ‭4:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We don’t know what the future will bring. I know I never imagined that 2021 would bring the changes that it did. Our life is fleeting and is over before we know it. May we focus on what really matters so that when it is over the legacy we leave behind inspires others to seek what is eternal instead of temporary.
