“In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.” Acts 17:30 NIV
Repentance involves a sincere sorrow for one’s past way of living – a heartfelt “I’m sorry” expressed to God – but it is far more than that. It is the turning away from an old way of living towards a new way. God requires this change in us because of our sin, which, apart from the experience of God’s grace, continues to hold such power over us. Those who do not repent will be judged; to only regret one’s sinful ways only leads to death.
For those who do confess their sins and turn to the lord in earnest and honest repentance, will receive God’s promise of forgiveness and eternal life. God wants everyone to repent; this call went out from the Old Testament prophets, from John the Baptist, from Jesus, and now from the disciples.
The call for repentance is a call of urgency. A 9-1-1 call if you will, which must go out today as well.

“And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.”
Acts of the Apostles 17:11 NLT
I remember a message at church that talked about counterfeit money. There are many ways a bill can be identified as a counterfeit and to learn them all would be impossible. The message was that in order to identify the fake, you had to know (inside and out) what the real thing looked like so that you could identify the one that was not real. The people of Berea checked out the real deal to see if Paul and Silas were in agreement or if they were spreading misinformation. When they checked out the scriptures that they knew to be true and matched up their message it was the same. Know the real thing and you won’t be blinded by the fake.
