Romans 2

“For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” Romans 2:13 NIV

The above verse speaks about those who hear and those who obey. Or one could say it differentiates the hearers from the doers. To hear something simply implies that one has the capacity of perceiving a sound. While doing, or obeying as it’s worded in the NIV, is to accept, adhere to, carry out, comply to, heed to, live by, surrender to, or to observe the law.

Knowing something is one thing, putting it into practice is another. It is not enough for a professional athlete to simply listen to or to watch videos on how to play a game, they need to apply their knowledge and perform during their game. A surgeon is not respected because of the books they have read, but for their steady hand and ability to effectively execute a difficult surgery. Likewise, hearers of the law are not found just in the sight of God, for only the doers of the law will be justified.

May we not just hear the Word of God, but may it guide our hearts and direct our paths. May we embrace it and choose to act upon it, so that when we stand before the Lord Almighty, we can receive the greatest praise ever – being declared righteous by the King of kings.

  1. “Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭2:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We recently talked about how it’s almost strange to meet a nice moral person who is not a Christ follower. It makes you wonder what motivation a person would have to be honest, trustworthy, kind, and loyal if it is not tied to their faith. This verse suggests that even those who don’t know God’s commands understand moral law and act accordingly. How much more should believers act accordingly, not only to be an example but also because if an unbeliever can, and does, it’s so much more important that our faith motivates us to behave according to His way.
