2 John

“If anyone comes to your meeting and does not teach the truth about Christ, don’t invite that person into your home or give any kind of encouragement. Anyone who encourages such people becomes a partner in their evil work.” 2 John 1: 10-11 NLT

While 1 John focuses on walking in love and our fellowship with God, 2 John focuses on protecting our fellowship from those who teach falsehood. In this chapter, John makes it clear what our position should be regarding the enemies of the truth, and even goes so far as to warn his readers against inviting false teachers into their house.

If we keep in mind what we read in 1 John – to walk in love and focus on our fellowship with God – it will naturally lead us to John’s focus here in 2 John – protecting our fellowship from those who teach falsehood. John defines love in verse 6 of 2 John this way, “And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.” Our love is dependent on our obedience; when we don’t obey, we don’t love. If we are walking in love, then we are obeying God, and therefore walking in the truth.

By walking in the truth, we are then loving others but only within the limits that truth allows. Yes, we must show kindness and a good spirit toward those who dismiss the teachings of Christ, but we must first and foremost hold firmly to all of His doctrine.

  1. “I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world. They deny that Jesus Christ came in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist.”
    ‭‭2 John‬ ‭1:7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Society has become complacent against absolute truth. Society preaches to us to determine our own truth. Even Christians seem to conform to the world’s view by picking and choosing the parts of the bible they want to follow. Many people would deny Jesus was who he says he was, that He died for our sins, or that he rose from the dead. But the truth doesn’t rely on what others believe. Truth is eternal. Surrounding ourselves with people who believe in truth is so important. People are growing away from God every day . May we strive to focus on truth.
