“Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.” 3 John 1:11 NIV
As in any public place, the church too has many people of influence that we can choose to follow. A good example of this are the two men that John writes about in this chapter. Gaius was faithful in providing for travellers of the church as they passed through town, while Diotrephes was excommunicating anyone from his church who had shown hospitality to visitors.
It is bad for us to not do good, but it is even worse when we are the stumbling block and hinder others who would have done good. John wrote this letter to Gaius, but it bodes well for us today too, to choose to imitate that which is good – for whatever is good comes from God. Evil workers vainly pretend to boast a knowledge or association with God, but it lacks good action.
Therefore, let us not follow that which is proud, selfish, and of bad design, even though the example may be given to us by a person of authority. Instead, let us be followers of God and walk in love; following the example of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

“I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth.”
3 John 1:4 NLT
This verse is on my nightstand. My desire and hope is that no matter where life takes my kids, my prayer is that they will follow the truth…not their truth…but God’s truth. That is where a parent’s joy is truly found because all things on earth are temporary but His truth is eternal.
